FAQ

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

See orange :)

Very good to see. So you know exactly where you fish. In my water it is not allowed to fish with a strike indicator so you have a better chance to see when the fish takes the fly very important when you cloud not see the fish. For me the best line.

Modern trout

My go to fly line for trout as well as bream. I cast it well and love the color, of course I still believe color does matter. Some might say it’s all in my head…. but it’s just the way I customize my personal fly fishing experience.

The Modern Trout is an excellent all around line

I really appreciate the Modern Trout. It works well on many of the rods that I regualrly use. I appreciate the fact that it can toss delicate dry flies, throw streamers, and roll-cast with ease and distance. It allows me to use one line throughout a day that can range from fishing weighted streamers, delicate dry flies, and smaller soft-hackles.

Excellent line!

I replaced my SA MPX line with the cortland 444 modern trout for my 3WT med-fast action rod. This line was a world of difference, and did not feel clunky when casting.

I would only ask for a welded loop for the backing end.

Built for Stealth, Designed for Performance

Cortland’s Modern Trout Moss Green fly line is the result of decades of angling experience fused with cutting-edge line design and material innovation. It’s tailored for today’s technical trout angler who demands quiet landings, precise loops, and stealth on the approach. Whether you're casting to pressured wild browns in tight pocket water, dropping a terrestrial beneath overhanging limbs, or presenting a #20 dry fly on glassy spring creeks, this line offers the precision and delicacy required for modern trout fishing.

The subdued moss green color is not just aesthetic—it’s strategic. It blends seamlessly into natural riverine environments, minimizing visibility to fish by reducing line flash and casting shadow. This is especially important when stalking fish in shallow riffles or ultra-clear tailwaters where any unnatural movement can shut down a feed.

This line features a finely tuned weight-forward taper that enhances loop stability and provides the ultimate in presentation control. The front taper delivers smooth turnover for small flies, while the rear taper offers superior line control for roll casts, mends, and delicate drifts. The head loads efficiently at short to mid-range distances, making it perfect for technical casts under low-hanging branches or in tight quarters. Backed by Cortland's legacy of innovation and precision engineering, the Modern Trout Moss Green line is an essential tool for dry flies, emergers, and soft hackles—giving anglers a stealthy advantage in the most challenging freshwater environments.

Smooth Casting, Unmatched Control

What sets the Modern Trout Moss Green apart is its superior handling in a range of freshwater conditions. Built on a supple yet durable core, it maintains a consistent performance whether you're fishing in warm summer air or cool mountain mornings. The line's slick coating reduces friction and extends casting distance while ensuring effortless mending and pickup.

Designed with control in mind, this line delivers tight loops and gentle turnover, allowing anglers to place small flies exactly where they’re needed. It's particularly effective in slow-moving water where trout are more selective, giving you the finesse to make presentations without disturbance. Whether you're sight-casting in gin-clear waters or targeting risers at dusk, the Modern Trout Moss Green gives you the stealth and command to execute with confidence.

Anglers from New York to Colorado rely on this line for its balance of power and subtlety—two traits essential for successful trout angling. It’s also favored by guides throughout the state of New York, where Cortland is proudly based, and trusted in technical fisheries across the U.S.

Engineered for Today’s Trout Angler

Incorporating a modern approach to taper design, Cortland’s Modern Trout Moss Green excels with medium to fast action rods. The line's versatility makes it a favorite among anglers targeting different trout species in various freshwater habitats. Whether you're drifting dries on the Delaware River, roll casting in a Pennsylvania limestone stream, or wading the tailwaters of Montana, this line adapts effortlessly to the challenge.

Durability is key, and Cortland's robust coating ensures your line resists cracking, dirt buildup, and memory—season after season. Each line is made in the USA with the attention to detail that Cortland has been known for since 1915. If you're based in NY or exploring waters across the United States, the Modern Trout Moss Green is a line you’ll want in your arsenal.
