The Best All-Rounder For This Fisherman

I began fly fishing 30-some years ago. I learned from an experienced friend who touted the 444 double taper. I have tried many lines in those intervening years, but none were the equal for my style of fishing than the 444. They're supple fly lines that offer smoother casting properties than lines twice their price. If you like fishing streams and rivers, you'll find no better.

Attractive, packaged neatly, well-made, and shipped quickly. Cortland is a great company and I buy probably 90% of my line from them.

Classic Line

I’ve used the Classic 5 weight for about 20 years now. I’ve had tried about 10 other brands or types of lines though out my fly fishing career but I always come back to this one.

Cortland 444 Peach Fly Line – A Timeless Standard in Fly Fishing Performance

July 15th, 2025

For over half a century, the Cortland 444 Peach Fly Line has earned its place as one of the most trusted and enduring fly lines in angling history. Revered for its ultra-supple feel and unmistakable casting control, the 444 Peach was designed with traditional performance in mind—but its legendary smoothness still holds strong in today’s modern fly fishing world. Whether you’re stalking trout with a dry fly or mending nymphs in a tricky current, the 444 Peach delivers a timeless balance of precision, durability, and finesse.

Built on a braided nylon multifilament core, this weight-forward floating line is expertly engineered to excel in moderate climates (30°F–70°F) and performs especially well on bamboo, fiberglass, and medium-action graphite rods. Its 90-foot length features a 32-foot front head designed for accuracy, mending, and easy roll casting, making it ideal for delicate presentations across small streams and mid-sized rivers. Finished in the unmistakable peach color, it remains a favorite among purists and professionals alike.

Classic Taper. Modern Responsiveness.

The strength of the 444 Peach lies in its perfectly balanced taper and forgiving feel. Its long front taper allows for subtle turnover and feather-light presentations, ideal for dry fly anglers who value finesse. The body and rear taper provide the stability needed for longer roll casts and efficient line control, helping anglers execute smooth drifts, reach casts, and line pickups with ease.

This line features a single welded front loop for quick and secure leader changes, and the supple coating resists memory and tangling—even after hours on the water. While it’s rooted in traditional fly fishing aesthetics, its performance is anything but outdated. The 444 Peach adapts effortlessly to today’s demands, providing seasoned anglers with the consistency they expect and new anglers with a confidence-building line that responds predictably to each cast.

For those fishing vintage rods or simply seeking a more relaxed, precise experience, the 444 Peach offers an unmatched connection between rod, line, and water.

Designed for Anglers Who Demand Feel and Finesse

Not every line has to be aggressive to be effective. The 444 Peach is purpose-built for those who value touch over torque—anglers who fish methodically, thoughtfully, and with an appreciation for control. It shines in spring creeks, freestone streams, and calm backwaters where subtlety is the key to success. Whether you’re targeting native brook trout with a #18 parachute Adams or presenting an emerger during a late evening hatch, the line’s high-floating, low-stretch design ensures your presentation lands with confidence and grace.

The 444 Peach Fly Line is available in both weight-forward and double taper options ranging from WF3 to WF7, making it suitable for a wide variety of freshwater species, including trout, bass, grayling, and panfish. Each line is meticulously manufactured in Cortland, New York, where over 100 years of fly line craftsmanship go into every spool. If you’re ready to cast a line that’s earned the trust of anglers for generations, the Cortland 444 Peach delivers an experience that feels like coming home—smooth, familiar, and undeniably effective.
