Fairplay Pro Nylon Tapered Leader is designed for general-purpose fly fishing where smooth turnover, controlled presentation, and line suppleness are important. Its nylon construction allows the leader to transfer energy efficiently while maintaining flexibility for natural drift.

Use it when: fishing dry flies, light nymphs, or everyday trout setups.

Do not use it when: maximum abrasion resistance or fast sink rate is required.

  • Anglers fishing dry flies or light nymphs
  • Situations where natural drift and presentation matter
  • Beginners and experienced anglers looking for reliable, easy-handling leaders
  • Everyday fly fishing in rivers, streams, and still water
  • Smooth energy transfer The tapered design helps move energy from the fly line to the fly smoothly, improving turnover without snapping or collapsing the cast.
  • Supple nylon construction Nylon remains flexible, which supports better drift and fly movement, especially on surface or near-surface presentations.
  • Controlled presentation The balance between stiffness and flexibility helps reduce slack while still allowing the fly to land naturally.
  • Forgiving handling Nylon leaders are easier to knot, stretch, and straighten, making them practical for frequent rig changes and varied conditions.

Choose this leader if:

  • You fish dry flies or lightly weighted nymphs
  • Presentation and drift are more important than sink rate
  • You want a supple, easy-handling leader
  • You need a reliable leader for general fly fishing

Is nylon or fluorocarbon better for fly leaders?

Nylon is often preferred for dry flies and general fishing because it is more supple and floats better. Fluorocarbon is typically chosen for subsurface fishing due to abrasion resistance and sink rate.

Can this leader be used for nymphing?

Yes, for light nymphs and shallow presentations. For deeper or more abrasive environments, fluorocarbon leaders or tippet may be a better choice.

Is this a good leader for beginners?

Yes. Nylon leaders are forgiving, easy to handle, and work well across a wide range of fly fishing situations.

New and very refreshing

Most of us by now have tried numerous shooting line designs and materials. As with most things, some have evolved while others have remained...flat. (sic)

So the braided mono was a very refreshing entry into an increasingly competitive market segment.

First and perhaps foremost, the lack any memory is an enormous plus. Line management has returned to a level of acceptability.

After a few days I chose to dress my line with a premium floatant.

YIPES!

"You...over there, on the other side of the river; you're standing in my water..."

Excellent product. Most excellent price point.

Positive thoughts on your braided shooting lines

I have been using your braided lines for many years. As a certified fly casting instructor I expose my students to your lines as they progress into various aspects such as hauling. The sound that is made during hauling really helps most of them understand the timing requirements on both the forward and backcast. I have also found that these lines performed very well in fresh and salt, hot and cold. The plus for me as a consumer is they last about forever.

Well done!

Tighter Lines,

Bob Arwine

The Braided Difference

I gave up on running lines for shooting heads years ago. Whether they were mono or thin diameter fly line they tangled incessantly. The waxed braid rarely tangle and it shoots like a dream whether permanently connected to the head or loop to loop. I love it!

Reviving old fly lines.

I recently learned about this little known shooting line via a good friend. I have several old saltwater fly lines gathering dust that had issues with running lines either too slick, cracked or tangling from my stripping basket. I prefer good grip and only one back cast targeting striped bass and false albacore from shore. After a little experimentation, I custom made my own shooting heads from these old lines using a gram scale to approximate grain weight of 30 feet of the heads and ten or more feet of the cut back running lines to find the sweet spot in some of my favorite medium fast saltwater fly rods. Oh my God. Old dog, New trick! Amazing results! Wishing I could buy bulk 100 yard spools of this stuff. No more tangled running lines! Simply insert the old running line and 40 pound section of perfection looped leader into each end. Whip finish the ends and add a few drips of Zap A Gap! Looped nail knot to the backing. Very strong connection based on over 30 albies to hand! Kudos to Matthew Borovy in tech at Cortland and Joe Goodspeed for all the help!

Good stuff!

This makes great shooting line for sinking shooting heads. Fairly good handling and flies through the guides. You should make sinking shooting heads again.

Difficult to use for making braided loops

Hi,

I was very excited, when received the waxed braided mono feels right, just like the previous braided mono for making braided loops. Unfortunately the new waxed linetightens less good when pushed over the flyline. It has fewer strings and is braided more loosely?? The old one, in 30 and 50 lbs stuck better on the flyline. I have no idea, why... but the quality of the line seems superb!

Yours sincerely
