Guide Series Combo Outfit

Love the reel and line it came with. I like the rod, but I do a lot of roll casting on the creek is typically fish, and often the rod comes apart. This happens sometimes but much less frequently with my Orvis Clearwater 9' 6wt rod. It also doesn't have the 'feel' that the Orvis does, but I understand that the Cortland is an entry-level outfit. I like that is has a warranty and to have it fixed is $50. If I was just back casting it would be better for me.

I purchased this rod as a gift to my sister to get her into fly fishing. Its typical to be leery of budget minded options esp in fly fishing but this is one heck of a combo! I would recommend this anyone, even experienced anglers. Does it compete against $1000 rods? Well, obviously no. But in the sub $300 space this is just as good as any of the others and you get a reel and line with it. The line that comes with this isn't bad, it actually casts well. I did swap it out to the 5wt Long Belly Distance but that was to help my sister get the hang of casting sooner. That line shoots and roll casts with minimal effort. Great job Cortland, keep making the great products you do that have no only keep us in the game but got us started in it. Tight lines.

Very happy. Guide series works great in our local waters. Also spooled up Cortlands”The Big Fly “on spare reel to easily switch to same rod when throwing streamers & running into sudden weather changes. Good stuff.
