Competition MKII Series Fly Rod - Euro Style Nymphing

Cortland's Competition MKII Nymph Fly Rods

Built using carbon fiber of military grade modulus and resins, these rods have been designed and built utilizing over 30 years of top level competition experience from the Cortland Prostaff. The balance of the weight and the main power in the butt section paired with a downward locking reel seat for this technique is paramount. An ergonomic fighting butt provides correct weight distribution and necessary control to land the larger fish.

Great balance

Perfect balance between feeling and casting action. 11FT 3WT work perfect for casting heavy nymphs in moderate wind from Patagonia, Chile. (Of course in heavy winds you can’t throw anything when you are euronymphing). It is not as sensitve as the Sage ESN, but still works pretty well and it allows to cast wider range of nymph/weights than the ESN.

It can fight big trouts (3kg) with no problem. Using Cortland 4x tippet. I assure you that worth the money. It is a great rod for big rivers and big trouts. For smaller ones I’d use a smaller size 2WT.

Comparison of old Competition rod with new competition, MK2 series.

Not as flexible as my previous older Competition rod. But I do like the rod very much because it casts better and more accurate than my previous 11 foot. 3 weight Competition rod. Recommend placing small white dots on the ends of each section so that alignment can be perfected when assembling the rod. Also recommend using snake guides.

Amazing touch with plenty of backbone!

Was given an MKII 2wt as a gift and was tempted to send it back in favor of a 3wt. So glad I didn’t. This rod has amazing touch with all the backbone you’ll need. A joy to fish!

Super Nymphing Rod

What a great nymphing rod. I have Euro nymphing rods from some other major brands and the Cortland MK II is probably the best handling of all of them. Light, tactile, works fine throwing a dry or dry/dropper when needed and the price is right when compared to the major brands.

Surprisingly Strong

Our wild trout can reach 20"+ on our local steam. High pressured water requires nimble feel, and perfect presentation of the right fly pattern. The MKII 11' 2wt is ideal most bugs, but especially the little bug game, and micro leaders. Had the chance to fight several larger trout in that 17"-20" category. Taken a few rides to trust the deeper bend on the longer lighter rod, but surprisingly strong spine with the bigger battles. Would not recommend as a do-all rod for swift water, dry flies, indicator fishing or heavier beads. It is the right tightline tool for our super technical river, in moderated seams and riffles, with our rich entomology. So far so good.
