Flats Taper Breakdown

When stealthy presentations are required in shallow water, our Flats Taper is the most versatile line for the job.

Our Flats Taper was built with multiple species in mind featuring a short 14 ft. body for quickly transferring energy into your cast and delivering flies efficiently.
The 26 ft. back taper helps carry line in the air when longer casts are necessary and allows for quick pickups when the fish are on the move. The short 6 ft. front taper effortlessly turns over weighted and non-weighted patterns without compromising subtle presentations.

This line features a monofilament core and our signature liquid crystal coating for withstanding the hottest temperatures while still remaining slick, supple and fast shooting. The sky blue color gives the angler slightly more traceability than our Flats Taper clear without compromising too much stealth.

Technologies

DUAL WELDED LOOPS

Welded loops make rigging fast, easy and reliable. Cortland loops are strong, secure and durable.

SHOOTING TECHNOLOGY

ST coating delivers a reduced-friction performance with a glass-smooth finish and remains a key element in line slickness over its life span.

POLYETHYLENE

Liquid Crystal Lines are built with a blend of polyethylene compounds (PE) over a monofilament core resulting in the toughest, slickest-shooting, floating fly lines.

WARM TEMPERATURE

Ideal use in 50 - 70 degree (F) temperatures

TROPICAL TEMPERATURE

Ideal use in 70 + degree (F) temperatures

FAQ

Our Flats Taper is built for tropic environments and will perform best in temperatures above 70 degrees (F). Our Liquid Crystal coating is designed to remain hard, slick and supple in the hottest conditions.

The taper design for our Flats Taper was built for ultimate versatility when targetting multiple species. The short body paired with a medium length front taper quickly transfers energy into your cast and easily turn over any weighted or non-weighted pattern in a subtle manner. The long rear taper helps excel in carrying line in the air and throwing tight loops. It also helps with quick pick ups off the water, when recasting to a target on the move. This line is built in true line size so your rod never feels overlined when casting maximum distance.

We designed our Flats Taper in sky blue to blend in with bright tropic environments and provide traceability to the angler.

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

Great Line

The liquid crystal lines are my favorite and work great with different rod characteristics, will work on multiple rod types in the same weight range. I saltwater fish and got the flats taper because of the head length. I was using a SA Grand Slam and prefer the Cortland flats taper over it on the rod I was using. The Grand Slam lines are more particulare on the guide configuration, power and actions whereas the Cortland Fats taper works on just about everything. I am getting about 80' to 90' with my NFC 6wt, that I bought the line for, and the 40' to 60' range is super easy and accurate. Even going against the wind with it was surprisingly effective with a 6wt line and large streamer. In saltwater you have to practice in windy conditions, with the wind, side wind and against it. You never know where you will need to cast and this line is very dependable on getting the fly where it needs to be.
